Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

An excellent dinner...waitress very helpful with our questions. We had the special which was chicken fajita, and it was very tasty. Definitely will return!

My family loved this place! We went last night to celebrate my birthday and they had music, it was great. My priority in restaurants is taste and service and both were beyond great! If it was not so far, I would be there every weekend! I recommend!
(5)Jake T.
great food but HORRIBLE customer service. they charged my card $22 when my meal was only $8. went back later that night and the manager said she couldn't help me and I was out of luck.

Went here again for breakfast - I love riding our bikes here in the summer; its a short jog west off the bike trail at Route 14 and Main Street by Hobby Lobby. We ordered off the menu because wanted something simple to share with the kids so we asked for carne asada con huevos revueltos (skirt steak with scrambled eggs). As always very friendly, great service. They open at 10am.

Good food. We like to just do the take out. Once we finish our meals we don't need to eat for the rest of the day. Is kid friendly, but it is much more enjoyable if they stay home!

Excellent burritos, steak tacos, horchatas, and en chilada's. This place is first rate, the waiters and waitresses have a little trouble at times, but they are very friendly and if you bear with them they will take care of you. Best mexican food in the area, period!
(5)C C.
I give this place 4 stars because I like the food a lot... appetizers are great, and the horchatas are real good too! They have a guy playing guitar, and its very entertaining and he plays the guitar really good and sings nice. I didn't give this place 5 stars because on Valentine's Day I went, and we waited about 20-30 minutes for anyone to take our order. Yea we had chips and drinks, but the only two waiters were talking to a group of girls and talking to each other by the counter. I didnt notice the time go by because I was talking and watching t.v. Other times they are really nice. When I decided to walk out, a waitress appeared and tried to get us to stay, but it was too late by then. That was really annoying. It'll be a while before I go back, but the food is good.

Best Mexican carryout in the area. Fast, friendly, and affordable.

An Ode to Mi Amor, Chimichanga "A cold wintry afternoon with gray skies and bitter wind The need for warmth and sustenance brought us in. Combining beans, meat, tortillas and cheese Wrapping them tightly, and frying them deep. Delighting in each bite I partake, I am happy, my hunger slaked." applause, applause ...I know, great poem, right??? Chimichangas are not authentic, I realize this. But deep fried burrito??? Sign me up! My second visit to El Burrito introduced me to my first ever chimichanga experience and I can't shut up about it. It was flippin' fantastic. I was hesitant because I've seen those frozen monstrosities and did not want that at all. But our server seemed pretty happy about them so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm very happy that I did. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good food. Great amount for food for your money. I haven't been able to finish my meal either time I've been. I believe you have to pay for a 2nd bowl of chips and salsa, but I don't know why you would need that 2nd bowl. No complaints about service, actually I would commend them because my husband and I are NOT the fastest decision makers and they've been quite patient with us. Definitely going back, probably numerous times.

Bottom line: food is delicious. My husband and I keep coming back. Best fajitas, delicious tacos, and great margaritas.
(5)Jenna A.
The service isn't great. The soup is good. Kids options include corn dogs. :) They over cook the steak. There's better Fundido at El Sombrero in Fox River Grove

Love this place. I have tried a lot of places out here and this one ranks number 1 with me. Good tasting food and service and usually very good.
(5)Dan P.
What kind of Mexican place doesn't have pickled peppers? Over all the food was okay but the chips and salsa were not to my liking.

I've been coming to this restaurant for years. The food is always good, the service however, is not. My friend and I ordered nachos and I asked for jalapenos on the side. I was informed that they don't have jalapenos... Ok, so I told the server that was ok and we would still take them, they never came. When the server brought our dinner I asked if we could get the nachos that we ordered and she looked at me like I suddenly grew a third eyeball... I ordered the Burrito Loco Suiza with Al Pastor for dinner. This dish is supposed to come with sour cream, guacamole, and beans. It came with only sour cream on the plate. I got up and grabbed a menu to double check and I was right. When I asked the server about it she said she would bring the guacamole but that the beans were inside the burrito, which I had already had several bites of, none of which contained beans. Sine she was arguing with me I decided to cut open the entire burrito to show her that there were no beans. She came back a minute later with a cup of guac and then said "Do you just want an extra side of beans, since they are in the burrito?" Seriously? I just SHOWED you that there weren't any beans... I finally gave up and told her to forget it, which she happily did... Never again.

Food is mediocre and service is horrible. The tamales must be microwaved! #totallydisappointed. If ur thinking of stopping here I wouldn't. Take the extra couple minutes and drive somewhere else!

Been here a few times, but I ordered something different this weekend and thought I would review. In the past, I've gotten the fried shrimp which were pretty good. Yesterday, I ordered steak quesadillas, but was served only cheese quesadillas. No apology from waitress. However, the rest of the service was good. And the food was ok, in my opinion. I do not like the salsa that they serve, way too watery. And I couldn't taste any of the tequila in my margarita, unfortunately. However, the soup that they serve to everyone is extremely delicious. I should have ordered a bowl full of that instead! Also, good rice, I like how it doesn't have anything else added into it (veggies, etc). The rest of my group that I was with really enjoyed all of their food, their plates were scraped clean :) I also feel like it's kind of expensive (for a Mexican joint).

The name says it all. If you want a burrito, they are pretty good, but that's it. I ordered a few diffrent things off the menu recently and results were not good. Food was not very appealing on the plate, or in your mouth. The quality is slipping over the last 10 years. I used to go here a lot, but not so much anymore.
(1)Victoria C.
Kind of hit or miss here - depends on the item. They only have a few good items. My husband said the tacos were bland (steak and chicken)- I enjoy their shrimp tacos although they are not cheap. Unfortunately there are no good mexican places in Crystal Lake - so I go here more than I should. At least they make their own red/green sauces - and they are quite tasty.
(3)Taylor M.
Meh. its ok, the burritos and taco are a little bland but still pretty good. the soups and salsas are very good.
(3)Capt Ron L.
This is by far our favorite place for mexican food. We're here at least every other week. Staff is friendly, portions are plentiful and reasonably priced. Most dinners come with soup as well. They have good Margarita's, so my wife says. The owner works just as hard as anyone else here. Took my wife and mother in law there for lunch today and the only reason why I can't give them 5 stars, THEY HAVE NO AIR CONDITIONING! I realize it's 103 out, but the fans didn't even help. UPDATE 7/15/12 THE AIR CONDITIONING IS WORKING! Yay
(4)JD M.
Good food and service, I love the enchiladas verde. They are always fast and delicious when if order takeout. I keep coming back here a few times a month.
(4)Ken K.
Can't believe so many high reviews for this place - Ithought it was horrible - I ordered a staple, steak burrito....."steak" was all about the size of a pencil eraser....and tasted about the same....CL needs an El Famous Burrito.... Only reason it's not 1 star is because it's a burrito joint , and in my book....Burrito's are like $@#.....even when they're horrible, they're still pretty good....

It's so hard to find good Mexican food in Illinois let alone McHenry County. This place is great. To me it has the right feel from the buzzing lights to the complementary soup that is served what seems like randomly. Some days we get it and some we don't. It's not that cookie cutter place with no soul. You come in here and get great food done right at a great price. You can watch as the cooks work the flat top right in front.
(4)Ally Z.
We love this restaurant. The food is really good and the prices are great. I love their soup too! This is our top mexican restaurant in the crystal lake/algonquin area.
(4)Karen S.
Stopped going here for a few years because it just didn't seem too good anymore. Update, went back there a few months ago and discovered they have really changed. The only Mexican food I like is hard shell, ground beef tacos. Bingo, theirs are out of this world. So thin and crispy. Some times they have waitresses, which really speeds up the service. And it's fun to watch the cook at his job!! Only Mexican food place for us!!
(4)Monica R.
If you're looking for good Mexican food with fantastic service in the Northwestern suburbs, El Burrito is what you're looking for. My boyfriend and I have been here several times and the food has always been great for the price and the service is wonderful, we've never been disappointed! Very authentic, margaritas, horchata, and soups are amazing! If you go on Cinco de Mayo, be wary, you'll wait in line forever to get a table, but you'll get free tequila shots with dinner!

If you're looking for some excellent mexican food this is the place!! Been going here for years and while the atmosphere is nothing more than some cheap tables and chairs in a strip mall location, at least you know you're not paying for the ambiance........LOL I love that about this place!! You walk in not expecting much and walk out thinking that you've wasted the last x amount of years going elsewhere when you could have been coming here for great food! There is not one dish I've been disappointed with over the years.......from tacos to fajitas to carne asada to chile rellenos.....don't even get me started on how absolutely fantastic their queso fundito con chorrizo is, I could literally bathe in the stuff!! Of course you've got to eat all of this great stuff accompanied by one of their delicious margaritas - one of the best I've tasted. If I could give El Burrito 6 stars I would.............keep doing what you're doing, it works! +Update: I previously gave this place 5 stars...was in recently and the service has definitely slid a bit. Food is still good, but the service really killed it for me.

When you go to El Burrito, here's what you can expect: The typical refried beans and rice along side standard Mexican fare such as tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc. However, the taste of the food exceeds that of most Mexican restaurants I have been to. It definitely isn't a grilled-shrimp-marinated-in-lime-and-cilantro-Âhoity-toity Mexican restaurant, but it offers some of the best tasting traditional Mexican food around. The value is tremendous. My husband and I just had dinner and margaritas, and our bill was $19.00!!! Monday and Tuesdays are $1.99 margarita nights. They are good, strong margaritas too! The guacamole is very good, and they have great Horchata too. I would recommend it for a night when you just don't feel like cooking, but you also don't want to spend a ton of money eating out. Almost forgot!! The service was great too. Our waiter was attentive and smiley.....just how I like service to be.

This place never disappoints. Great food, amazing service, and lovely atmosphere.

After 15 years of going here, I am finally getting around to writing a review of el Burrito. Lets get the bad stuff out of the way first -- The place looks like a dive. It is situated in a corner of a dying strip mall and the bathrooms can be dirty at times. Occasionally the wait staff have a difficult time with the English language. That said, the food is outstanding! Only a fool would go to a place called el Burrito without trying the burritos. The burritos are massive. All the other menu items I've tried have been excellent as well. Everything is fresh and homemade. Prices are more than reasonable. The best part is the $1.99 Margaritas every Monday and Tuesday night! If you are looking for some excellent and authentic Mexican food, give el Burrito a try. You won't be disappointed.

I think maybe this place has changed owners a couple times in recent years? You know the food is going to be good when all the decorations are donated by Mexican beer companies and the only thing on TV is futbol or telenovelas (soap operas). Very good food here, including more seafood than you see on most Midwestern menus...many choices on the menu overall. Very good flan dessert. Be careful on ordering appetizers because you will fill up and spoil your meal. The people that worked there have always bent over backwards to be nice to the point where we just wind up lingering around longer. Lots of choices for the kids like chicken nuggets, mini-quesadilla, fries, hamburgers, etc. Both my sons are under 5 but will eat the soup here, which we've never seen them do anywhere else. Also it was fun that they have a guy in there playing guitar and singing table side sometimes. If you think Mexican food comes from Taco Bell or can't understand why everyone won't "learn the language" to better serve you, do the rest of us a favor and skip this place. We really like it as it is!

If it's one thing my Chicago-native fiance has taught me about Mexican food, it's that the divey looking places are pretty reliable. I was resistant to his opinion at first, but El Burrito helps prove his point. It's not quite a real dive, just nothin' fancy. They have good, moist tamales (only chicken), tasty beans and fresh homemade chips. The guac didn't really have anything to offer. Maybe the atmosphere isn't a great spot for a date night (though if you were considering a bean-heavy meal for a date, you were probably on the wrong path anyway) but it's great for a tasty dinner out with friends or family that won't break the bank.
(4)Heather A.
El Burrito is the best place in town for Mexican food. They have a little bit of everyhing on the menu. The fajitas are excellent, as well as the lengua tacos. The only item I've found to be disappointing was the rabbit - you could tell it was frozen, not fresh. Fantastick margaritas, affordable prices and a super friendly staff make this a regular Friday night stop.
(4)Jennifer D.
This place was fabulous. The food was great. Even though it's kinda of a run down decor it was clean. Plus it's cheap. I got an appetizer, dinner, desert and a margarita for 20 bucks!
(5)Allie G.
Service is top notch! Great consistant food. Make sure you get the Fajitas!!
